Regular professional cleanings form another important component of good preventive care. A hard white substance, called tartar or calculus, forms on teeth and cannot be removed by brushing. Tartar provides a place in your mouth for bacteria to live and contributes to gum disease and bad breath. Tartar can only be removed by a dental professional. Regular cleanings in our office along with good habits at home can help you maintain healthy gums.
Gum disease is initiated by plaque and tartar on teeth causing inflammation of the gums. Early gum disease, also known as gingivitis, causes gums to be swollen and inflamed. If plaque and tartar are not removed from teeth, more advanced periodontal disease (periodontitis) will occur eventually leading to bone loss and destruction of the soft tissues that anchor the teeth to the jaw. This can lead to tooth mobility and loss. Gum health is checked at every examination. If you have gum disease, Dr. McBratney-Owen will organize a treatment plan to help you improve your gum health.
